Ocean pitch challenge® 2023

A look back at the 2023 edition!

Created from the alliance, in France, between Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) and RespectOcean, this challenge aims to:

  • Develop and promote economically viable solutions for the protection of the oceans and its marine and coastal ecosystems ⚓;
  • Give the opportunity to applicants to have their solution reviewed by a Committee of experts of the Blue Economy (the "Expert Committee")🔎;
  • Train 10 finalists at the pitching technique in order to develop their presentation skills, and increase their chances to have their solution funded by investors🎙️;
  • Reward the top three candidates during a Grand finale 🏆 ;
  • Reward three additional solutions on the following themes "special prize for the preservation
    of marine biodiversity", "special prize for bio-inspired solutions", "special prize for early-stage solutions".

THIS YEAR

🌊 136 applications were submitted between January 19 and midnight February 28.

10 solutions were retained by the independent selection committee, composed of experts from different business sectors.🌊

PODIUM

PARADOXAL SURFBOARDS
Solution: Replace petroleum in the manufacture of surfboard cores with beached green algae.
Impact: Fight microplastic pollution by "upcycling" beached seaweed, which is considered a waste product.

ECOVIRONMENT
Solution: Use of innovative plastic extrusion technology to convert ocean-bound plastic into paving slabs and bricks.
Impact:
Combating plastic pollution and promoting the use of sustainable, environmentally-friendly building materials.

VLINDER
Solution: Acceleration of blue carbon projects (focusing on mangrove restoration), initial funding at an early stage (pre-land use rights, pre-planting) and support for these projects to make them investable.
Impact: Restoration of mangrove ecosystems in Africa and Asia. 3370 ha of degraded coastal areas restored, 5.3 million native mangroves planted in Myanmar, Indonesia and Kenya.

THREE SPECIAL PRIZES

In addition to the three winners, the Expert committee will award three special prizes:

  • The "solution for marine biodiversity" special prize, in partnership with the Office français de la biodiversité (OFB)
  • The "bioinspired solution" special prize, in partnership with NewCorp Conseil / Biomim'Expo
  • The "early stage" special prize, in partnership with SOA 

 PINOVO remporte le prix spécial "solution pour la biodiversité marine". Ce prix, en partenariat avec l'Office français de la biodiversité est le partenaire permettra à Pinovo de bénéficier d'un accompagnement technique ainsi que d'une journée découverte d'un parc marin français

 ENEREEF remporte le prix spécial "solution bio-inspirée". Ce prix, en partenariat avec Biomim'Expo, NewCorp Conseil permettra à Enereef de bénéficier d'un accompagnement stratégique de la solution auprès de l'écosystème du biomimétisme par NewCorp Conseil et d'un stand à Biomim'Expo 2023.

TONTOTON remporte le prix spécial "jeune pousse". Ce prix, en partenariat avec Sustainable Ocean Alliance permettra à TONTOTON d'accéder au programme et à la communauté SOA.
